Fort McKavett State Historic Site

standing atop a windswept remote hill, the weathered remains of an old frontier fort beckon the curious to explore the buildings and parade grounds that echoed once with the sound of bugles and shouted commands. There are 25 whitewashed buildings including barracks, the post headquarters, a bakery, a deadhouse and sinks. Established in 1852 to protect travelers heading west, it was described by General Sherman as the “prettiest post in Texas.” Periodic living history events with civilian re-enactors portraying Texas Rangers, buffalo hunters and 1880s saddletramps recall bygone days.
